With over 30 trillion cells, the human body is amazing!
And just as astonishing is the fact that our bodies utilize the foods we consume to rebuild, refresh, and renew each of those cells! Our bodies are a constant work in progress!
We have learned, if we want to operate at peak performance, we must consume a diet filled with nutrients our body needs. Our diets dictate how those cells will rebuild, affecting our overall health.
Making healthy choices consistently is imperative, to not only obtaining optimal health, but to maintaining it as well.
We never have fully arrived. We are constantly a work in progress.
The same is true with spiritual health.
The choices we make, moment by moment, form our spiritual diet. The music we listen to, shows we watch, books we read, activities we do, and conversations we participate in all nourish or detract from our spiritual health. Spiritually, we are a constant work in progress!
I have learned I must spend time in His word almost daily. I must practice learning and leaning on His promises. I must make time to pray, practicing both talking to Him, and listening.
When my usual routine is interrupted or infringed upon, my spiritual health will eventually decline.
Reinstating those habits can be hard work. I realize, I won’t see results overnight.
But with determination, commitment, and a reliance on God’s grace, my spiritual health will improve.
Spiritual choices, like food and exercise practices must be made intentionally.
Joshua blatantly laid out our choice when he recorded Joshua 24:15, “But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” (NIV)
Joshua realized the first step to optimal spiritual health, or faith, was intentional choosing.
He chose faith.
Once we chose Christ, we must chose how to draw closer to Him. How will we build, develop and deepen that faith?
Let’s pray for God’s guidance on how to improve our personal spiritual diets this next week.
Prayer: Dear Lord, You created me to worship and serve something, someone. Show me how my choices in everyday activities affect my spiritual health. Guide me in choosing better habits so I can draw closer to You. Thank You, Lord, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
