“I know this isn’t right, but…”
“Well, stress is high right now…”
“It’s been hard since COVID hit,…”
I hear these statements a lot. I’ve even uttered these statements, a lot. Extending grace to others is good. But, in evaluating our own actions are we extending ourselves grace or lowering our expectations?
Jesus extended grace. He also readily acknowledged when behavior was wrong. He didn’t excuse and He didn’t lecture. He lovingly instructed.
See your sin.
Stand convicted.
Say you’re sorry.
Then go, and sin no more. (See John 8:3-11).
Jesus also promised “My grace is sufficient for you. For my power is made perfect in weakness.“ (2 Corinthians 12:9) When we feel convicted, and awful and angry with ourselves our conviction can lead to a heart change. We realize we don’t have to be strong, good, perfect. His grace has got us.
When we wonder how we might ever keep from failing again, Jesus promises to deliver what we need. He will supply all our needs. His grace covers our mistakes and helps us change from making excuses to making us more like who God intended, more like Christ.
So, if you too have uttered one of those phrases one too many times or found your standards dropping, take it to Jesus.
He’ll appreciate the honesty.
He’ll accept the apology.
And He’ll encourage us both to go, and sin no more.
Prayer: Dear Lord, I am so sorry for making excuses. Please help me clearly see my mistakes. Convict my heart. Then, help me accept Your grace. Help me to go, and sin no more. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
