Do you ever question if God can or will meet your needs? Do you ponder the promise in Genesis 15:1 where God declares, “I am your shield?”
What is a shield? According to dictionary.com, a shield is a broad piece of armor used as a defense. As a verb, to shield means to serve as a protection for. When God tells Abram in Genesis 15:1, “Do not be afraid, Abram, I am your shield, your very great reward.” God is telling Abram he has nothing to fear. When looking at this verse in context, Abram had a lot to worry about! He had just defeated an army composed of a partnership of four kings. He was probably expecting some retribution!
Isn’t the phrase, “ your very great reward” interesting? Here God refers to the material reward Abram denied himself when the king of Sodom offered to pay him for his fighting services. (Genesis 14:21) Abram refused to be compensated for what the Lord had done. God acknowledged Abram’s sacrifice and also reassured him that He would compensate him for a job well done.
God knows exactly what we need, when we need it, and He knows how to meet it.
Maybe you’re thinking, Well, that’s fine. But I’m in a situation where I’ve been waiting awhile for the answer and I wonder when or if, it’s coming.
Abram felt that way too! And, he addresses his issue straight on with God. In verse 2, Abram detailed his problem: Yes, You have given me these things, but who will I leave this to? You promised me an heir and yet, I remain without one. Abram loved and respected God. He also felt he could go to God and honestly tell Him his heart.
Does this encourage you as it does me? While God is our great protector, He’s not just a bodyguard. He’s interested in us personally, and wants us to tell Him what is on our hearts. He’s not just a shield from the physical harms, but the emotional hurts and the spiritual hamperings, as well. We can come to Him for protection from anything, and He will shield us.
I hope that comforts you as it comforts me. God wants to shield us, protect us and guard us as we go about life. He wants to hear what is on our hearts.
Will you join me in prayer for that open communication?
Prayer: Dear Lord, I find I don’t often think about asking You to shield me. Yet, You clearly promise I do not need to be afraid, that You are happy to be my shield. Help me to remember that and to ask for Your care. Thank You that You are indeed my shield, my very great reward. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
