A blaring siren sounded in my ear. The clock read 2:37 AM. This familiar medical alarm emitted from my phone on my nightstand. I rose to deliver juice to my loved one – the remedy for low blood sugar.
I focused on her glucose monitor, trying to force myself to fully wake up so I could make the best medical decisions possible. I also needed patience as I sat her up and fed her while she remained half-asleep. I knew she wouldn’t recall this early morning episode. But my body would… all day long. Because I would remain awake for an hour at least.
But if there’s one thing God’s taught me the past five plus years I’ve done this caregiving: He supplies every need.
Sometimes it’s a trimmed to-do list or a colleague delivering a cup of coffee. Sometimes it’s a surprise surplus of energy from I don’t know where.
Yes, He’s authored any number of ways to supply my needs for energy and for rest. He’s so creative!
Recently I had a very short night and knew there was a very full day ahead of me.
God, I’m relying on You today. That’s where He wants me everyday.
Not just when I know I can’t make it without Him.
Not just when it’s obvious to me (and everyone around me!)
He wants me solely relying on Him. All. The. Time.
That’s the joy in the exhaustion: How’s God going to provide this time?
And through that exhaustion I’m drawing closer to Him.
And therein lies the blessing.
“Come near to God and He will come near to you.” James 4:8 (NIV)
Because His word is true. As I rely on Him, He draws closer to me. I am intentionally looking for Him. And He is purposefully providing for me.
How about you? Do you often find yourself desperately in need and wonder how you’ll manage?
Ask God. Claim His promise in Philippians 4:19. “My God shall supply all your needs.” He will show up, when He’s invited. Let’s ask Him for just that.
Prayer: Dear Lord, You know my needs. I have no idea how You’ll fix this, but that’s why You’re God and I’m not. Please draw me closer and teach me to rely on You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
