Sinking onto the bed, I finally let the tears flow. I was alone. I didn’t need to keep up a strong front for one more minute. I was alone.
And the what if’s raced through my mind. Worry and confusion ushered in fear.
I bet you’ve been there. What do you do when fear promises to remain a constant companion?
Isaac learned how to approach fear in Genesis 26. Verse 24a reads, “That night the Lord appeared to him and said, ‘I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid, for I am with you.'” (NIV)
God’s saying, “I’m here. I got this.”
If you’re like me, I agree with that theoretically. In my head, He’s God. Yes, He can handle whatever. But in practice, I need to align my thoughts with my beliefs.
Do I believe God is who He says He is? Almighty. All-knowing? All powerful? If I do, that belief should start to quell my fear.
The situation may not change immediately. (It rarely does.) But how I handle it can, especially when I invite God in.
Surrendering to Him isn’t easy. It’s often not a once and done request. Sometimes I need to re-surrender moment by moment.
But that repeated surrender doesn’t mean my faith failed. No, I’m learning to trust Him. Jesus said in John 10:10, “I have come that they may have life and have it to the full.” (NIV) He isn’t just about the eternal saving of our souls, but the rescuing us from the rip-out-your-heart moments of each day.
He wants to do life, moment by moment with each of us. And He wants to equip us as we need it. He promises, “My grace is sufficient for you for my power is made perfect in weakness.” 2 Corinthians 12:9. (NIV)
He can help us conquer fear. We only need to ask. Then we need to trust Him to fulfill His promises. He’ll even help us implement, when we request it. Let’s ask Him to do just that.
Prayer: Thank You Lord that I don’t have to live in fear. Help me surrender to You, moment by moment, when necessary. Thank You for caring for my daily moments as much as for my eternity. Help me rely on You every moment to take away my fear. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
