“What on earth is happening?” I shook my head in disbelief as I clicked my screen off. I didn’t want to see anymore.
Natural diasters.
A persistent virus.
People protesting.
Destruction at all levels.
Weird astronomy.
God, I’m really scared! I’ve never seen anything like this!
As always, reading Scripture set my heart at ease. Jesus advised his disciples exactly how to handle these types of things in Luke 21. “When fearful events happen; wars, rebellions, Don’t be alarmed.” (Luke 21:9 HCSB)
Alarmed can also mean frightened, apprehensive, distressed, having dread, panicked and terrorized. (Dictionary.com)
Perfect words for depicting my feelings while living in a pandemic. Maybe you can relate.
Yet, Jesus says, “Don’t be alarmed.”
Really? Why?
In John 16:33 He declares, “I have told you these things so that in Me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But, take heart! I have overcome the world.”
He’s overcome the world.
He’s still in control, even when I’m not.
He’s still in control, even when I can’t see it.
He’s still in control, even when the world seems out of control.
So, how can I get through this?
Focus on Him. Jesus did say, “I have overcome the world.”
Focus on His promises.
He promises everyday to show up and give us what we need. (Philippians 4:19)
He promises He is forever faithful. He doesn’t get scared and run off. (Lamentations 3:23)
He promises even this, will lead to an opportunity for witnessing. (Luke 21:13)
He promises He will use even this for good! (Romans 8:28)
I know I need to spend more time studying His word than anxiously scrolling my screen. I need to fix my focus on what He says, not what the media screams. And I need to listen to His voice of reassurance and love instead on my own inner voice of doubt and fear.
Maybe, you are thinking the same?
Let’s park our thoughts on His promises. Won’t you join me in a prayer to help our convicted hearts recall His promises and claim His peace?
Prayer: Dear Lord, Thank You that You are indeed in control. You are not surprised by statistics, calamities, catastrophes or chaos. You know how You plan to use even this. Please help me fix my eyes on You and surrender my fears, frustrations and folly of searching a screen for solace, when it’s Your Word that will still my worries. Thank You for meeting me right where I am and providing for me, every single day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
