“Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and all your strength.” Deuteronomy 6:5
The other day I had an interesting conversation with our ten-year-old daughter. She was talking about what is important to her and she used the phrase, “I hang my heart on it.”
I immediately received a powerful mental image when she spoke those words. The next question, which forced itself to the forefront of my thoughts: “Where do I hang my heart?”
On my husband? On my kids? On a career? Having just celebrated Easter on Sunday, am I still filled with awe and thanksgiving of just how important I am to God, come Monday? Or is my focus one of trying to resume a routine?
Do I truly believe, and live out the promises in Psalm 1?
“Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.
He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever He does prospers.
Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgement, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.
For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.”
Do I hang my heart on Gods’ promises? Or do I hang onto others’ opinions of me? Do I really believe God rewards obedience to His laws and punishes disobedience, (Deut 28 and 30)?
Does how I live reflect where I hang my heart?
Reflections:
Monday: Where, or on what, do you hang your heart? How is that working out for you?
Tuesday: Reread Psalm 1. Think back on any poor choices you have made in the past. How were those destructive to you? Reflect on good choices you have made; how did those become blessings to you?
Wednesday: Reread Psalm 1:2-3. What happens to those who delight in the Lord? Read Psalm 119:105. What are both passages saying?
Thursday: Reread Deuteronomy 6:5. List three ways you can live out that verse today. Implement!
Friday: Prayer: Thank you Lord, for loving me so much, You authored a plan to redeem me to You. Lord, please help me to make You the focus of my days, Your words, the words which spring to mind in life’s confrontations. Please guide my response to others so You are reflected in both my words and actions. Please help me not to turn to media or culture to guide my response to people but to Your word. As You promise in Psalm 1:3 anyone who obeys Your laws is like a tree planted by streams of water. You are that water Lord, You and only You can feed my soul. You promise that in the proper timing, those who obey and yield to you will in turn yield fruit and will indeed prosper. Please bring those words to mind as I enter each day and am reminded how different You have called Your children to be. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
Thank you for reading! Please feel free to respond collectively or just to me by email. I so appreciate your comments and how you challenge me! Have a wonderful week, and please return by Monday, April 8 for the next post.
I love that your lesson gives me something to specifically focus on each day. Thank you for your all of your efforts.
