What steals your joy?
A disagreement with your spouse?
A deadline at work?
Worries over a loved one?
For several years, something stole my joy. In exchange, I received stress, lost sleep and a non-stop nagging in my heart.
I had no choice (or so I thought): I had to do this for my family.
Of course, during those years, I would not have named it for what it was: a joy-stealer.
But I have learned to open my eyes a bit wider. I refuse to run the rat-race. I refuse to sacrifice joy. I relate to Psalm 30:5b, “weeping may spend the night, but joy comes in the morning.”
You too have probably learned that being a Christian doesn’t come with an automatic prescription for happiness.
We still experience difficulties, challenges, and yes, even heartbreak.
Psalm 30:5 acknowledges that, “Weeping may spend the night.” Those times we wouldn’t author will come. We will be saddened, disappointed, and disheartened. And those periods may last longer than a literal night. One of my times lasted over four years.
So how did I get through?
- I had to trust He saw me, and He had me. (Genesis 16:13)
2. He knew what He was doing even if I could not comprehend it. (Jeremiah 29:11)
3. He would redeem even this. (Romans 8:28)
4. Yes, Joy would eventually come. It’s a promise! (Psalm 30:5)
While that particular trial finally ended months and months ago, as is life, I have had others.
But I do have joy.
His joy.
And He shares my burdens and gives me rest.
While life on earth is challenging, I know I am never endlessly stuck in a hopeless spot. I know that joy will eventually come.
How about you? Has your heart found His joy? God knows life on earth is difficult. He encourages us to turn to Him. Life won’t be easy and we won’t always be happy. But we will find His endless joy.
Prayer: Lord, please help me recall Your promises: You see me. You know what You’re doing. And, You will redeem even this. I won’t always be stuck here. Thank you, that Your joy will come. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
