“The Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:6b (NIV)
Squawking, the two parakeets flitted around the cage. When the yellow male, Star was introduced to the green female, Clover, we jokingly called them “love birds.” They lovingly preened each other’s feathers for hours on end.
Shortly after Star’s arrival in our home, we opened the cages to allow them to fly free. We had forgotten that the pet store had clipped Star’s wings. He couldn’t get off the ground because he didn’t have all the feathers for flight. Clover took off as usual and perched herself high above on the curtain rod, two stories up. She frantically called to her dear friend. Realizing he wasn’t joining her, she flew right back down to the table beside the cage.
She hopped up close to him. She preened his back. She chirped. He hopped toward her. She moved to the table’s edge. He moved too. He jumped off the table and landed in the carpet. She dropped down beside him.
She seemed to comprehend he could not fly.
No matter, she stayed right beside him. She didn’t leave him for greater heights, more freedom, or better views. She stayed with the one she loved.
Jesus did the same. He left heaven to come and be one of us. He left paradise, His father’s side for a human life of discomfort and pain. He didn’t have to. He chose too. He chose to because He loved each of us so much, He was willing to forgo his birthright. He was willing to sacrifice His own pleasure to accompany us back to God.
And He is willing to stay by our side today. Whatever we are going through. Whatever limitations we have. Whatever keeps us where we are, he is willing to meet us there.
Just as Clover stayed with Star, we can trust Jesus to never leave us. We are never alone.
Reflections:
When do I feel utterly alone?
What three things can I do to help me recall I am truly never alone?
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, Please help me to grow my faith and readily recall I am never alone. Even when I might feel desperately alone, You are with me. Help me remember the promise You made in Deuteronomy 31:6, that You are always with me. Thank You for Your faithfulness, In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Please share in the comments how you remind yourself that you are never alone.
I love that we are never alone, and I am thankful for friends who show that of Jesus to me.
